Next them, the second place is given to our law-drivers, if not the first, whose profession,

though I say it myself, most men laugh at as the ass of philosophy; yet there's scarce any

business, either so great or so small, but is managed by these asses. These purchase their

great lordships, while in the meantime the divine, having run through the whole body of

divinity, sits gnawing a radish and is in continual warfare with lice and fleas.

Après les Medecins, marchent immédiatement les Légistes, & les Jurisconsultes. Je ne sai si ces

suppôts de Themis ne debroient point avoir l'honneur du pas sur les Prêtres d'Escaulape: entre

eux le débat. Ce qu'il y a de vrai, c'est que les Philosophes presque unanimement se moquent

des Docteurs en Droit, nommant cette profession une Science d'Ane. Anes tant qu'on voudra;

ce sont pourtant ces interpretes des Loix qui réglent toutes les affaires: ces Messieurs

s'enrichissnet à leur mêtier; pendant que le pauvre Théologien est réduit à manger ses feves,

& à faire une guerre continuelle à sa vermine.
